Sunday Postscript: August 23
Growing in God's Word
Below are some additional thoughts that didn’t make it into Sunday morning’s sermon:
- Bible study is a process not an event. Don’t expect an “aha” every time you study. Some Christians become discouraged because their Bible study does not always leave them feeling inspired. There may be days, and even several days in a row, in which you do not sense that you are growing. Don’t depend on your feelings. A child does not feel growth. But suddenly, one day, the child realizes the clothes he or she once wore no longer fit. Growth had been such a slow process, the child was unaware of it.
- On the days you do not experience inspiration, ask yourself three questions:
1. Have I learned new information in this study?
2. Have I received instruction regarding the kind of person God desires me to be?
3. Am I willing to be obedient to the truth I have received?
When you can answer those three questions in the affirmative, you can bless yourself by saying, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Can Christians bless themselves? Absolutely! When you know you have been faithful to God, claim the grace of obedience.
- When you read one of the more difficult passages to understand, don’t give up. Remember the Bible interprets itself. Another passage of Scripture may give you insight into what you have read.
