Sunday Postscript: September 6
Bits and Pieces
Below are some additional thoughts that didn’t make it into the sermon on Sunday:

  • There are two reasons why love is greater than faith and hope. First, the Christian virtues of faith and hope will never be fully understood apart from experiencing Christian love. Second, faith and hope are belief systems; love is an experience.

  • The statement, “you can’t legislate morality” is only partially correct. You can legislate moral behavior, but you cannot legislate moral motivation. Laws are passed to control behavior. Eventually, someone finds a way to legally get around the purpose of the law, and then a new law is required. However, when Christian love motivates and informs our morality, we do right even when wrong is not illegal.

  • John Westerhoff wrote the following words, “The spiritual life is prior to the moral life.” This is why inviting others to experience and express the love of Jesus Christ will do what morality can never do.
