Church Approves New Children’s Education Building

In a Called Business Meeting on January 23, 2011, the members of Dawson approved the recommendation of the Ad Hoc Building Committee that the church enter into contract with General Contractor Brasfield & Gorrie to construct the Edgar M. Arendall Children’s Education Building as designed by architect CDH Partners at a Guaranteed Maximum Price of $7,043,649, with the total cost of the project (including architect fees, FF&E, and owner’s contingency) not to exceed $8,783,836. At the recommendation of the Finance Committee, the church approved Regions Bank as the financial provider for the purpose of refinancing the existing debt as well as construction financing as needed, with the Finance Committee authorized to finalize the terms of the loan and the use of up to $200,000 from Unspent Budget Funds for bank financing costs and fees related to construction interest and closing, and associated construction financing fees. Any unused funds will be returned to Unspent Budget Funds.

The building will add 45,260 square feet of educational space for children and youth from birth through high school. Construction will begin immediately and will be completed in approximately one year. Groundbreaking will be celebrated in worship services January 30.

The architectural renderings and the floor plans of the building are on display in the Gathering Room in the North Building, the Foyer in the Sanctuary Building and the Atrium in the East Wing. They are also available on the Dawson website CLICK. Updates on construction and pictures will also be available on the website throughout the construction process.

The entrances on the Oxmoor Road side of the East Wing will be closed during construction but otherwise there should be minimal disruption. Your patience is appreciated.

Flower Ministry Reaches Many
Lil HurstIf you have ever wondered where Dawson’s beautiful Sunday morning floral arrangements go following Sunday’s services, you should meet Lillie Hurst (better known as “Lil”). For many years—more than anyone can count for sure—but about twenty by estimation, Lil has led Dawson’s well-loved flower ministry. As a church, we would like to thank Lil for her many years of service as she retires from this role.

When asked what her greatest joy in leading the ministry was, Lil replied “Making people happy and letting them know we care.” Each Monday, she would rearrange the flowers from Sunday into smaller arrangements to deliver to homebound members and residents of nursing homes.

Lil recalls one time she went to a nursing home to deliver some small pots of flowers. She asked for names and room numbers of residents who did not have family to bring them flowers. In one room, she introduced herself to a woman in a wheelchair and offered to set the pot of flowers on the table. “Oh no!” The woman responded. “I want to hold it!” Taking the flowers into her hand, she smiled and held them up to her face. “No one has ever brought me flowers before.” she said.

Moments like these will stay close to Lil’s heart for years to come.

Dennis Goodwin

His love for God was demonstrated
by the life he lived

Dennis GoodwinDennis Goodwin died on Sunday, May 16 from prostate cancer. He was born in Mobile, Alabama, on February 5, 1951, the son of Nolen and Mary Kicker Goodwin. Dennis grew up in Cuba, Alabama, and graduated from Livingston University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. As a missionary journeyman, Dennis spent two years in Seoul, Korea, serving as Youth Director at the Seoul International Baptist Church.

Dennis was currently Minister to Adults, primarily senior adults, at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. He was formerly a minister at Cloverdale Baptist Church, Montgomery, Alabama; First Baptist Church, Jacksboro, Texas; Capitol Heights Baptist Church, Montgomery, Alabama; Second Baptist Church, Springfield, Missouri; First Baptist Church, Plano, Texas; and Springhill Baptist Church, Mobile, Alabama.

Before his most recent tenure at Dawson, he was owner/designer at Cobblestone Design in Birmingham and used his talents to decorate rooms in three Birmingham Symphony Decorator Show Houses.

Dennis is survived by his wife of 32 years, Susan, and son, Sam. He has two brothers, Randy (Sheila) Goodwin of Cuba, Alabama, and Richard (Gaye) Goodwin of Gulfport, Mississippi. He is also survived by family members Lee (Dalee) Kicker, Glenda Shelton, Thad (Doris) Moody, and Carol (Strom) Herbert.
